AMOEBA

This amoeba was found in a sample of water from an old culture flask. Note the  Haematococcus cell that has been ingested by the amoeba. The Haematococcus cell was approximately 20 micrometers in diameter. The odd colours of these images is due to very low intensity lighting and inadequate correction for this. However, I find that low lighting levels are easier on the eyes.

This image of the same amoeba was captured 30 seconds after the first. You  can see just how much this animal can move in a short time.

Searching the same water sample revealed another amoeba with similar characteristics as the first. This time, two Haematococcus cells had been ingested.

This particular specimen was then seen to head for yet another Haematococcus cell but at this point, I had to leave and never witnessed the outcome.
