Lunularia cruciata

This liverwort was found growing on a gravel path in the grounds of the old Buccleuch Parish church, Chapel Street, Edinburgh. Image taken with Nikon Coolpix 950 with Microscopes Plus eyepiece adapter
 

Gemma cup of Lunularia cruciata
 

The crescent shaped gemmae cups give this species it specific epithet. The gemmae can be seen within the cup in this image.

The gemma is a vegetative organ of reproduction
